What Qualifications Do You Need?

In order to pursue a degree in Engineering, you will generally need:

(1) SPM / O-Level Qualification

  • Minimum of 5 credits, with good grades in Mathematics, Additional Mathematics & Physics

(2) Pre-University Qualification

How Long Is an Engineering Degree?

An Engineering degree is usually 4 years long, but some universities may offer 3-year degrees.

If you intend to get a professional qualification as a professional engineer in Malaysia, you must study an accredited Engineering degree. After at least 3 years of relevant work experience, professional development training and passing the professional exams, you can then register yourself as a professional engineer.

What Will You Study in an Engineering Degree?

Generally, you will study applied mathematics and basic computing, in addition to specific subjects that are related to your chosen Engineering discipline, for example:

(1) An aptitude (and huge love) for mathematics

Many scientific laws, from Newton’s law of motion to Kirchhoff’s circuit laws, are mathematical expressions. In order for you to understand and apply these concepts, you must first have a solid foundation and a good understanding of the mathematical principles behind it.

(2) Ability to logically approach and solve complex problems

We’ve said it once, and we’ll say it again! The heart of Engineering is about solving problems, so you must be able to take a complex problem and break it down to understand the mechanics of it. Finally, you must be able to piece together all the knowledge that you have learnt to come up with a viable solution.

(3) Ability to think creatively

Engineering isn’t just about calculations. Hand-in-hand with problem-solving is the ability to think creatively. You will need to be able to come up with multiple ways to solve a problem, and this requires creativity and the ability to think outside the box. Remember that many of our everyday innovations and modern day technologies are built by engineers!

(4) The drive and determination to learn and work hard
