FAQs about Studying Foundation in Science (FIS) in Malaysia
Foundation in Science (FIS) is a Pre-University programme with a focus on preparing you for a science-related degree. This course can be taken after completing SPM, and can be considered as a Year 12 qualification, which is equivalent to STPM or Malaysian Matriculation (Matrikulasi).
In Malaysia, a Foundation in Science is a direct pathway into a university’s degree programme. Students who complete a Foundation in Science typically continue on with their degree at the same university, often in areas such as Engineering, Bioscience and Computer Science.
The assessment structure varies depending on the university, since the exams are usually administered by the lecturers who teach you. Typically, it will be a combination of coursework and final exams.
A Foundation in Science is recommended for those who are extremely certain that they will be pursuing a science-related degree at the same university.
Foundation in Science programmes in Malaysia typically require you to have at least 5 credits (C and above) at SPM, O-Level or equivalent. Most universities will also request that you have a credit in Mathematics and two Science subjects.
If you plan to pursue Degrees such as Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy, you will need to have at least 5Bs in Mathematics and Sciences for your SPM, instead of 5 credits.
In order to study Foundation in Science, you will need to have an SPM qualification or equivalent.
Foundation in Science programmes are usually 12 months long, a shorter course compared to A-Level.
After completing your Foundation in Science, you can proceed to pursue your Degree.
