TAR UMT Student Shines As Second Runner-Up at the International-National Mathematics Competition 2025

The competition involves solving 100 mathematical questions without calculators.

Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) student Peh Yi Hong recently made his mark on the international stage by clinching the Second Runner-up spot in Category Z at the International-National Mathematics Competition (I-NMC) 2025. The event, held on 2 August 2025 and jointly organised by Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) and Tunghai University in Taiwan, brought together top mathematics students for a fast-paced challenge.

Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Management Mathematics with Computing, Yi Hong competed under immense pressure. Participants were required to solve 100 questions on probability and statistics within just 20 minutes, and they had to do it all without calculators. Despite the challenging format, he pushed through with determination.

Reflecting on the experience, Yi Hong admitted that the race against time was tough. “I was quite frantic during the test, but competing with my peers was both an exciting and challenging experience. I only wished I had prepared more because there were some unfamiliar questions which took up much time to solve, resulting in me falling behind during the later stages. However, I am incredibly satisfied to win the second runner-up prize despite the circumstances.”

He credited his strong support system for helping him get competition-ready. “My lecturers were very helpful in providing me sample questions to practice and prepare myself mentally prior to I-NMC 2025. I must also credit my course mates as well, who helped me take notes in class and made sure I did not fall behind in my studies while preparing for the competition.”

Yi Hong’s achievement highlights not only his mathematical capabilities but also the value of preparation and perseverance. His accomplishment serves as an inspiring example for students aiming to challenge themselves and hone their skills beyond the classroom.
