Entry Requirements

Standard entry

  • A bachelor's degree of at least four years in a relevant discipline, which includes a research thesis or project, with a minimum overall average grade of an honours degree equivalent to the Second Class Honours Division B with mark of 65 or above; or
  • A master's degree in a relevant discipline which includes a research thesis or project equivalent to at least 25 percent of one year of full-time study, with a minimum overall average grade of an honours degree equivalent to the Second Class Honours Division B with mark of 65 or above; or
  • A qualification, or combination of qualifications and relevant professional experience, deemed equivalent by the GRC (or delegate)

School of Information Technology graduate research entry (MPhil, course code 3337)

  • A bachelor's degree or an equivalent qualification or satisfactory substitute as rated by Monash Graduate Education
  • Minimum equivalent to H2B
  • Duration is full time 2 years and part time 4 years

Note: Students admitted to the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree will have to undergo a confirmation milestone within 8-10 months of EFT candidature

Graduate research English language test requirement (Information Technology)

  • IELTS or IELTS One Skill Retake overall 6.5 with Reading 6, Listening 6, Speaking 6 and Writing 6 at an Academic Test Centre
  • TOEFL (internet-based) from 21 January 2026 overall 4 with Reading 3.5, Listening 3, Speaking 3.5 and Writing 4.5 at a test centre
  • TOEFL (internet-based) prior to 21 January 2026 overall 79 with Reading 13, Listening 12, Speaking 18 and Writing 21 at a test centre
  • Pearson Test of Academic English overall 65 is required for Arts, Business and Economics, Education and Law only, while Information Technology requires overall 58 with 50 in each skill
  • C1 Advanced overall 176 with Reading 169, Listening 169, Speaking 169 and Writing 169 at a test centre

Note: Tests must be taken at an official test centre and home-based or online test formats are not accepted. Test results must be valid at the time of application, meaning no more than two years old.

Alternatives to an English language test

  • Applicants from Monash-approved English-speaking countries who have successfully completed tertiary studies taught and assessed entirely in English are generally considered to meet the English Language Proficiency requirements
  • Prior tertiary study of at least two years' full-time duration taught and assessed entirely in English may satisfy the requirement within the published timeframes
  • Applicants may be able to complete the Monash English Program where their English test result doesn't quite meet the minimum, with Information Technology listed under the Standard program
