General requirements

• To enter Monash University, you must satisfy particular academic, English language and age requirements

Standard entry

• A bachelor's degree of at least four years in a relevant discipline, which includes a research thesis or project, with a minimum overall average grade of an honours degree equivalent to the Second Class Honours Division B with mark of 65 or above
• A master's degree in a relevant discipline which includes a research thesis or project equivalent to at least 25 percent of one year of full-time study, with a minimum overall average grade of an honours degree equivalent to the Second Class Honours Division B with mark of 65 or above
• A qualification, or combination of qualifications and relevant professional experience, deemed equivalent by the GRC (or delegate)

Progression to Doctor of Philosophy

• Students may complete relevant coursework in a particular discipline area and achieve a minimum score of 70 per cent to upgrade to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Minimum test scores (Arts; Business & Economics; Education; Law only)

• IELTS/IELTS One Skill Retake: overall 7 with Reading 6.5, Listening 6.5, Speaking 6.5 and Writing 6.5
• TOEFL (internet-based) from 21 January 2026: overall 4.5 with Reading 4, Listening 4.5, Speaking 4 and Writing 5
• TOEFL (internet-based) prior to 21 January 2026: overall 94 with Reading 19, Listening 20, Speaking 20 and Writing 24
• Pearson Test of Academic English: overall 65 with Reading 58, Listening 58, Speaking 58 and Writing 58
• C1 Advanced (formerly Cambridge English): overall 185 with Reading 169, Listening 169, Speaking 169 and Writing 185
• Note: Tests must be taken at an official test centre and results must be no more than two years old, with home-based or online test formats not accepted

Prior tertiary study in English

• Applicants may meet the requirement through a tertiary qualification of at least two years' full-time duration that was taught and assessed entirely in English, completed within the timeframes published by Monash
• Note: Qualifications completed at Monash University in Australia, Malaysia or Indonesia must be a formal tertiary qualification.

Monash English Program

• Applicants whose English test result does not quite meet the minimum may be able to complete the Monash English Program, with the Advanced program applying to Business & Economics
