Standard entry

• A bachelor's degree of at least four years in a relevant discipline, which includes a research thesis or project, with a minimum overall average grade of an honours degree equivalent to the Second Class Honours Division A; or
• A master's degree in a relevant discipline which includes a research thesis or project equivalent to at least 25 percent of one year of full-time study, with a minimum overall average grade of honours equivalent to the Second Class Honours Division A; or
• A qualification, or combination of qualifications and relevant professional experience, deemed equivalent by the GRC (or delegate)

Note: The minimum academic qualification requirements listed apply to admission into a PhD or doctoral course

University English language requirements (Monash University Malaysia)

• For entry to Monash University, you must meet the minimum English language requirements except for Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine which requires higher English requirements
• You can demonstrate your English language proficiency through studying English at Year 12 or equivalent, studying at an institution where English is the language of instruction, English Proficiency Tests or Monash English
• You must meet specific English language requirements when applying for our master's and doctoral research degrees
• You must submit full documentary evidence in support of English proficiency with your application for candidature
• Note: If your first language is not English, or where degree qualifications were not undertaken in the English language, Monash reserves the right to seek further documentary evidence of English proficiency

Graduate research English language test minimums (Engineering)

• IELTS/IELTS One Skill Retake requires an overall result of 6.5 with Reading 6, Listening 6, Speaking 6 and Writing 6
• TOEFL (internet-based) from 21 January 2026 requires an overall result of 4 with Reading 3.5, Listening 3, Speaking 3.5 and Writing 4.5
• TOEFL (internet-based) prior to 21 January 2026 requires an overall result of 79 with Reading 13, Listening 12, Speaking 18 and Writing 21
• Pearson Test of Academic English requires an overall result of 58 with Reading 50, Listening 50, Speaking 50 and Writing 50
• C1 Advanced (formerly Cambridge English) requires an overall result of 176 with Reading 169, Listening 169, Speaking 169 and Writing 169
• Note: Tests must be taken at an official test centre, home-based or online test formats are not accepted, and results must be no more than two years old.
• Note: Minimum test score requirements vary by Faculty and the scores listed are those for Engineering.

Prior tertiary study in English

• Qualifications completed at Monash University (Australia, Malaysia, or Indonesia campus) must be a formal tertiary qualification, with a two-year full-time course completed within five years of application and a one-year full-time course completed within two years of application
• Study in a Monash-approved English-speaking country, or at an overseas institution where English is confirmed as the sole language of instruction, must have a minimum duration of two years of full-time study and be completed within five years of application
