General admission requirements

• To enter Monash University, you must satisfy particular academic, English language and age requirements

Standard entry

• A bachelor's degree of at least four years in a relevant discipline, which includes a research thesis or project, with a minimum overall average grade of an honours degree equivalent to the Second Class Honours Division A; or
• A master's degree in a relevant discipline which includes a research thesis or project equivalent to at least 25 percent of one year of full-time study, with a minimum overall average grade of honours equivalent to the Second Class Honours Division A; or
• A qualification, or combination of qualifications and relevant professional experience, deemed equivalent by the GRC (or delegate)

Note: These are stated as the minimum academic qualification requirements for admission into a PhD or doctoral course

Approved English language test scores (Business & Economics)

• IELTS/IELTS One Skill Retake: overall 7 with Reading 6.5, Listening 6.5, Speaking 6.5 and Writing 6.5
• TOEFL (internet-based) from 21 January 2026: overall 4.5 with Reading 4, Listening 4.5, Speaking 4 and Writing 5
• TOEFL (internet-based) prior to 21 January 2026: overall 94 with Reading 19, Listening 20, Speaking 20 and Writing 24
• Pearson Test of Academic English: overall 65 with Reading 58, Listening 58, Speaking 58 and Writing 58
• C1 Advanced (formerly Cambridge English): overall 185 with Reading 169, Listening 169, Speaking 169 and Writing 185
• Note: Tests must be taken at an official test centre, home-based or online test formats are not accepted, and results must be no more than two years old at the time of application. Minimum test score requirements vary by Faculty and the scores listed are those published for Arts, Business & Economics, Education and Law.

Alternatives to an English language test

• Applicants from Monash-approved English-speaking countries who have successfully completed tertiary studies taught and assessed entirely in English are generally considered to meet the ELP requirements
• Applicants may meet the requirements through a tertiary qualification of at least two years' full-time duration that was taught and assessed entirely in English, completed within the published timeframes
• Qualifications completed at Monash University (Australia, Malaysia or Indonesia campus) must be a formal tertiary qualification, with two-year courses completed within five years and one-year courses completed within two years of application
• Applicants may be able to complete the Monash English Program where their English test result doesn't quite meet the minimum, with Business & Economics requiring the Advanced program

• The Malaysian Government also sets minimum English language requirements and a time limit of two years for each Monash University degree, and applicants will be advised on application whether they meet these requirements
