- To enter Monash University, you must satisfy particular academic, English language and age requirements
To apply for the Doctor of Philosophy, you must have completed at least one of the following
- A bachelor's degree requiring at least four years of full-time study in a relevant field, and which normally includes a research component in the fourth year, leading to an honours 1 or 2A in a relevant field
- A course leading to a level rated by the University as equivalent to an honours 1 or 2A in a relevant field
- A master's degree that entails work, normally including a significant research component, including at least 25% of one full-time equivalent year of work, including a thesis
- Have qualifications which in the opinion of the Graduate Research Committee and Monash Graduate Research Office are deemed equivalent
- Note: It is normally expected that a grade of honours 2A has been obtained for the research thesis or project. Where ungraded, examiner's reports will be taken into account
Applicants from approved English-speaking countries (First language English)
- Applicants from Monash-approved English-speaking countries who have successfully completed tertiary studies taught and assessed entirely in English are generally considered to meet the English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements
- In most cases, no English language test is required

- Home-based or online test formats are not accepted
- Test results must be valid at the time of application, that is no more than two years old

- IELTS/IELTS One Skill Retake requires an overall 7 with Reading 6.5, Listening 6.5, Speaking 6.5 and Writing 6.5
- TOEFL (internet-based) from 21 January 2026 requires an overall 4.5 with Reading 4, Listening 4.5, Speaking 4 and Writing 5
- TOEFL (internet-based) prior to 21 January 2026 requires an overall 94 with Reading 19, Listening 20, Speaking 20 and Writing 24
- Pearson Test of Academic English requires an overall 65 with Reading 58, Listening 58, Speaking 58 and Writing 58
- C1 Advanced (formerly Cambridge English) requires an overall 185 with Reading 169, Listening 169, Speaking 169 and Writing 185
- Note: All listed tests must be taken at a test centre and have a validity of less than two years

Prior tertiary study in English
- Applicants may meet the requirements by completing a tertiary qualification of at least two years' full-time duration that was taught and assessed entirely in English, within the published timeframes
- Qualifications completed at Monash University in Australia, Malaysia or Indonesia must be a formal tertiary qualification
- A two-year full-time course must be completed within five years of application, noting the time-frame for Arts and Law programs is 2 years
- A one-year full-time course must be completed within two years of application to Monash University
- Study in a Monash-approved English-speaking country, or at an overseas institution where English is confirmed as the sole language of instruction, must have a minimum duration of two years of full-time study and be completed within five years of the application, noting the time-frame for Arts and Law programs is 2 years
