Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027 is out and Malaysian universities are the clear winners.

This year's ranking, which includes a total of 2,297 institutions from 118 countries and territories worldwide, saw 29 local institutions making it into the list, an increase from last year's 27, with 8 of them landing a spot in the top 500.

Leading the cohort is Universiti Malaya (UM). Ranked at #194, this marks the first time a Malaysian university managed to break into the world's top 200. Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) (#242) and Sunway University (#283) follow closely behind as they take the second and third spot. In general, Malaysian universities fared well with most climbing or keeping their ranks.

Globally, Oxford University (UK) is still the world's #1, a spot it has defended for the eleventh consecutive year. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) follows in second place while Princeton University (US) and Stanford University (US) share the spot for #3.
