TAR UMT Student Emerges as a Rising Star in Deloitte SEA Tax Challenge 2023

Meet Vincent Lui — making waves in many business competitions, including the recent Deloitte SEA Tax Challenge 2023.

Vincent Lui Kok Leong, a final-year student in the Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) programme at Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), made a recent triumph, securing the Champion and Best Presenter Award in the Individual category at the Deloitte SEA Tax Challenge 2023 against competitors from Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. 

Over the years, he has emerged victorious in various national and regional business competitions. Vincent's winning streak began with a Second Runner-Up position in the Accounting Competency Challenge 2021. His prowess in the field continued to shine as he clinched the title of Champion and Best Presenter in EY Young Tax Professional of the Year 2022 and led his team to victory in the Deloitte Audit Business Challenge 2022. In the same year, he also secured the Champion and Best Presenter Award in Deloitte Tax Challenge Malaysia 2022.

What drives Vincent's success? He attributes it to his unwavering self-confidence and motivation. Having tasted victory in the past, he was motivated to reach greater heights. Representing Malaysia at the regional level of the Deloitte SEA Tax Challenge was a significant step forward for him and he was determined to give it his all.

Participating in these competitions isn't all glitz and glamour. Vincent shared that the Deloitte SEA Tax Challenge 2023 was no walk in the park. Contestants had a tight schedule, with just 1.5 hours to tackle a complex case study and written assessment, followed by a 15-minute presentation covering diverse topics, from international tax and supply chain to contemporary issues like Base Erosion & Profit Shifting (BEPS), Global Minimum Tax and Digital Taxes. 

In addition to completing his ACCA, he is considering a career in either international tax or consulting practices in taxation. 

Vincent’s story serves as a source of inspiration for students and aspiring competitors everywhere. His journey from the classroom to becoming a champion in business competitions underscores the importance of self-belief, dedication and a passion for continuous learning.
