TAR UMT Students Showcase Artistic Excellence With Wins at Maybank’s MyTIGER Values Art Competition

The two talented students from TAR UMT’s Bachelor of Creative Multimedia (Hons) programme won top honours with their impactful artwork.

Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) has once again showcased their commitment to nurturing talented students, with two of their students emerging as winners in the MyTIGER Values Art Competition organised by the Maybank Foundation. 

Phung Jie Hua and Robin Soon Wei Ming, both from the Bachelor of Creative Multimedia (Hons) programme, proudly represented TAR UMT in the Photo Imaging category, securing 1st Prize and the Jury Award respectively.

Phung Jie Hua secured the top spot with his captivating digital artwork titled, ‘Hands of Creation’, inspired by Benny, a renowned digital artist from Benny Productions. The artwork depicts human hands creating savanna islands, showcasing the crucial role that humans play in environmental stewardship. Jie Hua’s artwork is not only visually stunning but also conveys a message about the significance of teamwork and collective efforts required to protect and preserve our environment. Furthermore, his artwork aligns perfectly with Maybank’s core values, as well as several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 15 (Life on Land), SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).

Additionally, Robin Soon Wei Ming was awarded the Jury Award for his artwork, ‘Giant Step’, a black and white piece that features a large tiger with a Chinatown backdrop, highlighting the strength and resilience symbolised by Maybank’s tiger logo. Robin’s artwork not only evokes nostalgia but also emphasises the importance of preserving Malaysia’s cultural heritage while embracing progress, with the tiger acting as guardian of tradition and unity. 

The success of Jie Hua and Robin highlights the impact of TAR UMT’s nurturing environment and dedicated lecturers, as Jie Hua expressed his gratitude toward his digital illustration lecturer, “My digital illustration lecturer, Mr Tham Chen Tong, encouraged me to join the MyTIGER Values Art Competition. He provided us with detailed information about the competition, including guidelines and themes, and conducted practical sessions to help us refine our skills and better prepare our submissions.”

Jie Hua also acknowledged the consistent motivation and support he received from his image manipulation lecturer, “Additionally, my image manipulation lecturer, Mr Kong Yee Fong, consistently encourages us to participate in external competitions to improve ourselves. He also teaches us a wide range of design theories and technical photo imaging skills, which have been invaluable in developing our creative abilities.”
