APU AYIMUN 2025

Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) remains in the global spotlight as a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Psychology student, Umaima Nadeem, made a remarkable impact at the Asia Youth International Model United Nations (AYIMUN) 2025. Hosted by the International Global Network (IGN), the event brought together 1,000 delegates from 38 countries, creating a space for young leaders to engage in leadership, negotiation and diplomacy.

As a UNICEF council delegate for Iraq, Umaima addressed the pressing issue of child soldier recruitment. With guidance from Dr Zhooriyati Sehu Mohd, a Senior Lecturer at APU’s School of Psychology (SoP), Umaima actively participated in discussions exploring the root causes, psychological trauma and long-term effects of forced recruitment on children. Her ability to articulate key concerns such as family separation, forced labour and exposure to violence demonstrated her deep understanding of the issue.

Furthermore, to propose a sustainable solution, Umaima introduced C.U.R.E. (Child Understanding and Rehabilitation for Elimination), an initiative designed to prevent child recruitment and support rehabilitation efforts. The framework emphasises awareness campaigns, skill-based education, and healthcare support to help affected children reintegrate into society. Additionally, Umaima worked closely with international delegates to refine her proposal, securing support through strategic discussions and negotiations.

Reflecting on her experience at AYIMUN 2025, Umaima shared her appreciation for the opportunity to engage with like-minded individuals dedicated to global change. “AYIMUN 2025 has been an unforgettable journey, made possible by the invaluable support and guidance of Dr Zhooriyati and the enriching learning environment at APU. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with so many passionate individuals working towards global change. This experience has sharpened my critical thinking, taught me the art of challenging different ideas, and enhanced my ability to develop impactful solutions through collaboration. I walk away with deep gratitude and a renewed sense of purpose, ready to carry these lessons forward,” she said.

Umaima’s success at AYIMUN 2025 reflects APU’s commitment to nurturing critical thinkers and future leaders who are prepared to tackle global challenges.
