Course Structure

Year 1

Two Level 1 science sequences (four units) from:

Blueprints for life and Life on Earth
Chemistry 1 advanced and Chemistry 2 advanced
Foundations in psychology and Introduction
to psychological inquiry.

Year 2

Scientific practice and communication
Five elective units (if you're choosing two PSY units) or four elective units (if you're choosing three PSY units)

Two or three units from:

Biological psychology
Psychological testing and assessment
Developmental psychology
Personality and social psychology.

Year 3

Five elective units (if you're choosing three PSY units) or four elective units (if you're choosing four PSY units)

Three or four units from:

Perception and cognitive psychology
Psychological disorders
Research methods and theory
Cultural safety, responsiveness, and reflexivity in practice.

Overview

Psychology:

Study the human mind, mental processes and resulting behaviour.
This is a broad scientific discipline that includes investigations of the brain, memory, perception, reasoning, and mental health and wellbeing.

Minors available:

Applied Microbiology: Study microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses. This knowledge can be used to prevent food spoilage and biofouling, stop the spread of infectious diseases, and solve environmental problems by removing pollutants.
Tropical Environmental Biology: Study the behaviour of living systems with a strong focus on ecological and environmental issues of global importance such as climate change, biodiversity and conservation. Sustainable approaches to environmental conservation and biodiversity preservation are also explored.
Chemistry (minor): Study the science of matter and energy, how atoms and molecules react and interact, and how that behaviour can be harnessed to transform materials, medicine and technology.
Genetics and Genomics (minor): Study the structure, function, transmission and evolution of genes. Genetics underpins many exciting areas such as biomedical science, conservation biology and forensics.

Prerequisites:

At least one of Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geography, Physics, Psychology or Mathematics at a higher level (Australian Year 12 equivalent).
Meeting the Monash course prerequisites are also subject to the 5 year rule.

Meeting maths and science prerequisite subject requirements from other qualifications:

If the course you are applying for requires maths and/or science as subject prerequisites and you have completed a Monash-approved international senior secondary qualification (excluding Australian Year 12 qualifications and IB Diploma Programme), or higher qualification, with maths and/or science at the required level, it will be assumed that you have reached the level of knowledge equivalent to the Australian Year 12 (i.e. VCE equivalent) prerequisite required for the Monash course as specified above (excluding Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine).
