The University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) recently hosted the Model United Nations (MUN) Conference Champions Cup 2024, bringing together 105 delegates from various institutions to debate pressing issues in a simulated UN conference.

Organised by UNM’s UN Youth Society, the event was officiated by Dr Benjamin Barton, Head of School and Associate Professor in the School of Politics, History and International Relations (PHIR), with esteemed guests such as Anban Ashlan Raj, Founding President of World Youth Leaders Organisation and recipient of the Diana Award 2022.

Underscoring the importance of this event for young leaders and delegates, Dr Barton stated, “This event showcases exemplary thought leadership, fosters critical thinking, and builds teamwork skills among all our youthful delegates as they speak passionately about the matters at hand.”

“We hope that more students seize the opportunity to partake in future MUN conferences and that we have the opportunity to continue upholding the importance of youth involvement in discussing international affairs to shape leaders of tomorrow,” Dr Barton added.

Throughout the MUN conference, the delegates tackled a range of significant topics across various UN councils. Discussions included topics such as cultural property repatriation, biopiracy’s global security implications, economic coercion, healthcare rehabilitation in post-conflict zones, child marriages and safeguarding the freedom to vote.

Reflecting on his experience, Daniel bin Hafiez, a student delegate from UNM, shared, “Being part of the MUN has been an enlightening experience. Not only has it sharpened my skills on my understanding of global issues and public speaking skills, but the collaborative environment and exchanging of ideas has also been eye-opening and inspiring as well.”

MUN conferences are pivotal in preparing students for real-world diplomacy and global citizenship, drawing over 40,000 student delegates annually from diverse educational institutions worldwide. This event underscored UNM’s dedication to nurturing future changemakers and developing young leaders equipped to tackle global challenges with creativity, positivity and teamwork.
