On 11 June 2019, Taylor’s University formed a partnership with the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS). The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signals the start of a public-private partnership to help boost the growth of the Malaysian film industry among students.
The MoU outlines the details of the partnership, which includes plans to collaborate on practical training, academic programmes, expertise and efforts to promote and develop Malaysian films and talent. The partnership is also responsible for the launch of a promising event — the Taylor’s University Film Festival (TUFF).
Scheduled to take place at Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus from 20 – 22 November this year, TUFF is open to entries from university students in Malaysia and Southeast Asia as well as upcoming filmmakers with no more than 5 years of experience.
The Chief Executive Officer of FINAS, Ahmad Idham Ahmad Nadzri said, “FINAS believes in the promotion and elevation of Malaysian films and talent, and we believe Taylor’s University is serious in helping the nation achieve this goal by fostering a culture among its students to explore and push the boundaries of film.” He added that FINAS aims to give grants to filmmakers who win awards at the Taylor’s University Film Festival.
Meanwhile, Taylor’s University Deputy Vice Chancellor and Chief Academic Officer Professor Dr Pradeep Nair said he was delighted that the university could play a part in championing the arts in Malaysia.
“Our students have a lot to contribute in the area of the arts. Film has an important role in society — it inspires, enlightens, makes us reflect on our values and ways of living, spurs creative thinking and even sparks technological innovation.”
So to all you aspiring filmmakers, be sure to participate in the Taylor’s University Film Festival and showcase your brilliant work!
