Malaysia’s Asia Pacific University (APU) keeps racking up wins, this time securing a double victory as the National Champion and Best Innovation Award winner of the Amazon Web Services (AWS)’s hackathon competition Build On Malaysia 2020.

Team AWSAPU, which consists of students from APU’s Software Engineering, Mobile Technology, Information Systems Security and Data Analytics programmes, created their winning system using Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, taking home prizes worth up to USD2,750 (RM11,411).

The Build On, Malaysia competition was hosted by AWS, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and Smart Selangor in efforts to encourage young entrepreneurs to exhibit their creativity. An online boot camp and a two-day AWS workshop, which was part of an international hackathon series for ASEAN countries to demonstrate their talents, were held to expose young entrepreneurs to potential business plans prior to the competition.

AWSAPU’s winning project, Visitor Management System, was developed to solve the problems faced by hospitals in managing visitors during a pandemic. The solution uses wearable technology and database systems to implement live visitor tracking, self-service registration and visitation bookings, all in accordance with the COVID-19 standard operating procedures.

As a national finalist, AWSAPU will represent Malaysia to compete against teams from Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines in the upcoming Build On, Asean 2020 competition.
