It was indeed a double celebration for Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) at the recent Bus Design Competition 2019, organised by Gemilang Coachwork.
Three students of the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Transport Design programme — namely second-year student Candraguna Bandaralage Bertholameuz Dindu Thejana Perera and final year students Khoo Wern Sheong and Timothy Chow Tian Le — bagged the first and third place accolades, respectively, with their futuristic and creative design concepts.
Held in conjunction with the leading bus body manufacturer’s 30th Anniversary, the competition, with its theme “City Bus”, aims to encourage more talents to showcase their creativity in bus design, as it is one of the most commonly used transportation in Malaysia and around the world.
It was definitely not an easy challenge. Participants were evaluated on their design skills as well as their practical knowledge of transport design. They were required to develop sketches, prepare research reports and present the development of their ideas over the span of 6 months. Perera, the first place winner whose passion and obsession has always been transport design, impressed the judges with the outstanding interior and exterior design of his sustainable semi-electric concept bus.
“I feel delighted to achieve this award after all the determination and sacrifice made. I believe nothing is impossible, hence I wish to achieve greater heights in the future,” expressed Perera.
Wern Sheong and Tian Le’s team effort also captured the judges’ attention with their conventional chameleon concept design, featuring embedded digital advertising panels on the body of a bus.
Here’s another big shout-out to the students for their winning entries!
