FAQs about Studying Canadian Pre-University (CPU) in Malaysia

Canadian Pre-University (CPU) is a Canadian-based pre-university programme that’s offered to students before pursuing a degree. It is considered a Year 12 qualification, which is equivalent to STPM or Malaysian Matriculation (Matrikulasi).

In Malaysia, you may come across several terms used to describe this programme – Canadian Pre-University (CPU) and CIMP (Canadian International Matriculation Programme). Both programmes are the same and lead to an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), a qualification which is awarded to Canadian students who successfully complete 12th Grade in high school.

Similar to the American education system, Canadian Pre-U emphasises on interactive learning, focusing on coursework as well as individual and group assignments rather than exams. Your final grades usually comprises of 70% coursework and 30% final exams.

Most students take 6 subjects, including English. Unlike A-Level and Australian Matriculation, subjects are delivered on a modular basis, which means you will study different subjects every semester.

This course is recommended for those who enjoy presentations, group work and debates, with continuous assessment as opposed to final exams at the end of the course.

Canadian Pre-University requires you to have a minimum of 5 credits (C and above) at SPM, O-Level or equivalent.

To pursue the CPU programme, you will need to have an SPM qualification or equivalent.

The course is usually 12 to 15 months long. You will take 6 subjects of your choice, and the subjects will be divided across the semesters.

Completing the Canadian Pre-U programme will allow you to pursue a degree at university.
